Richard Grist | Paul W. Grist


Richard Grist Richard bridges the gap between the forest industry and the real estate industry. Working full time as a Registered Professional Forester, Licensed Real Estate Broker & Auctioneer, Richard lives the relationship between timber and land.

While selling farms and recreational timberlands through Foxfire Mountain Properties, Richard continues to provide forestry consulting and timber merchandizing services to area landowners and real estate developers through a sister company, Mountain State Land & Timber.

A 1979 graduate of West Virginia University, Richard holds a BS degree in Forest Resource Management. He is also a graduate of West Virginia University @Parkersburg Real Estate Institute, becoming a licensed real estate agent in 1992. In 2004, Richard graduated from the Nashville Auction School in Tullahoma Tennessee and is a licensed Auctioneer. Richard served many years on the board of directors of the Greenbrier Valley Farm Bureau and has also served as a director on the Greenbrier Valley Board of Realtors.

After graduating college, Richard worked several years in North Carolina as a timber resource buyer for a major forest products firm before moving home to West Virginia in 1985. For the next 17 years, Richard bought and sold land, timber and export veneer logs for Grist Lumber, Inc.; a hardwood sawmill producing high quality lumber and export veneer logs. Richard also supervised the timber harvesting operations on both private and company owned lands for the Company.

Richard, and his wife Mary, have been married 30 years and live on Meadow Mountain just beyond the beautiful Greenbrier Valley with "Polly Dog" and "Too Dogs".


Richard and Mary have two children. Paul is a graduate of Virginia Tech and works with Foxfire Mountain Properties as an Auctioneer and Realtor. Caroline is also a graduate of Virginia Tech and is pursuing her Masters Degree in Education in Salt Lake City, UT.

Paul Grist Since joining the business in 2006, Paul has played an integral part in the growth of the company. In January of 2007, he and his father created Foxfire Mountain Properties to focus on the real estate industry and provide auction services. Today, Foxfire Mountain Properties is a leading marketer of fine homes and country estates across the Greenbrier Valley and southeastern West Virginia. Paul specializes in land and farms and markets residential and commercial properties.

Paul graduated from Virginia Tech in 2005 with a bachelor of science in Environmental Policy and Planning with a double-major in Political Science. He is also a graduate of the West Virginia University at Parkersburg Real Estate Institute and recently became only the second person in West Virginia to earn the GREEN Designation from the National Association of REALTORS.

Paul thoroughly enjoys his work as an auctioneer and ringman. In 2006, Paul graduated from the Nashville Auction School in Tullahoma, Tennessee and is a licensed Auctioneer. He is also an alumnus of the Professional Ringmen’s Institute in Missouri. In an effort to better serve clients, he is attending a three year executive development program, the Certified Auctioneers Institute, which focuses on developing the skills and providing the tools necessary to run a top-notch auction firm. In February 2009, Paul won the West Virginia Auctioneers Association Bid Calling Championship, Rookie Division.

Paul is currently on the Board of Directors for the West Virginia Auctioneer’s Association as well as the Board of Directors for the Greenbrier Valley Board of Realtors. Also an active member of the Board of Directors for the United Way of the Greenbrier Valley, Paul serves as Vice President for the organization which covers three counties including Greenbrier, Pocahontas and Monroe.

In 2007, Paul was selected as a member of Rotary International’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) to Japan. Along with three other members and a team leader, he spent a month in Japan experiencing the culture and learning about the Japanese professional and business world. Upon his return, Paul joined the Lewisburg Rotary Club and has been active ever since.

Paul, and his wife Jessie, are happy newly weds and reside in Ronceverte with their energetic Wirehaired Fox Terrier, Cadbury.
